To some, Barcelona is the ultimate city of ‘cool’, from its clothes to its music to its art, where life centres on the tapas bars and cafés, restaurants and clubs; others find its charm in the Old Town with its ancient buildings, narrow streets, Roman ruins and many churches. But, to many, the most striking feature of Barcelona is its architecture, in particular the astonishing works of Gaudi. Above all, perhaps, it is a city of fun and a great place to have a base.

Things To Do

Things To Do - Barcelona, Spain

Walk on the arty side
In Barcelona, taking a walk in the park is not only a way to relax, it can also lead you to discover some great art. Get up and get out for a walk around the lush gardens of the Teatre Grec and then head over to the Fundació Joan Miró, one of the largest museums in the world and home to a collection of over 225 paintings, 150 sculptures and graphic pieces by the Spanish surrealist painter, along with a number of works by his contemporaries.

Hit a high note in concert
Barcelona has its fair share of live music venues, such as Razzmatazz and Apolo, but the city boasts some wonderful concert halls as well. The Gran Teatre del Liceu is a survivor in splendour, decorated with gold leaf, plush red carpets and ornate carvings. Don't shy away from checking out the programme, as tickets are not always as expensive as you might think, and it's a space that's definitely worth a visit. Then there's L'Auditori, a sleek space with a capacity for 2,400 concert-goers, and not just fans of classical - they also host jazz and world music performances, among others. The Palau de la Música Catalana is celebrated for its modernist architecture and for the sheer number of concerts it hosts. Barcelona is also home to several international music festivals, including Primavera Sound, the Festival, Sónar and Cruïlla, among others.

Discover the city on foot
Barcelona is a big city, but it's the perfect size to discover on foot. Spend a day away from the metro and the tourist bus, and take your time strolling around and stopping to recharge with some of the city's great gastronomic options. If you're in the mood for visiting some of the most impressive buildings and parks, you'll want to see all the Parc de la Ciutadella has to offer as well as the Parc de Joan Miró, and the Montjuïc castle, but there's also a Barcelona you won't find in guidebooks. Get off the beaten path and head up to Horta, get to know the charm of the Sant Andreu district, see a lesser-known side of the Eixample and take in breathtaking panoramic views.

Climb up the magical Montjuic Mountain
Montjuïc mountain is the perfect place for a leafy stroll with great views, but it does take a bit of legwork to get up there, so it's less populated by tourists. But don't let that deter you. Apart from from the natural surroundings and spectacular vistas, you'll find buildings from the 1992 Olympic Games, including the Palau Sant Jordi and the telecommunications tower designed by Santiago Calatrava. If you're feeling full of beans and you get to the top of the hill, you can check out the Olympic stadium and the Jardi Botànic. Plaça Espanya, at the foot of Montjuïc, is the most common access point to the mountain, and where you can also visit the Pavelló Mies van der Rohe and the CaixaForum cultural centre.

Get to know the city’s history
When visiting a new city, it's always good to learn a bit about its history in order to understand its architecture, its art, what makes it tick, and something of the character of its people. As an international city, Barcelona is full of diverse cultures and heritages, and with every step you take through its streets, you'll stumble upon some of its history.

Shop and Stroll
In Barcelona, holidays and shopping go hand in hand. Everything is close at hand: you leave a fashion boutique and, boom! Right next door is one of Gaudí’s architectural marvels.

Savour delicious cuisine
Barcelona is a gourmet city, where you can enjoy the very best of the world-renowned Catalan and Mediterranean cuisines. Whats more look out for special discounts that are now being offered at a number of the city’s restaurants. Bon profit!

Christmas in Barcelona is a wonderful experience!
Every afternoon when the daylight escapes, the artificial lights kick in and fill your heart with Christmas spirit! The Barcelona Shopping Night will feature different fairytale themes; Puss in Boots, Peter Pan and Hans Christian Andersen stories. You can experience the Christmas feeling throughout the entire city. The Christmas lights and decorations, there will be a big Christmas tree on Plaza de Catalunya and a large outdoor covered Christmas ice skating rink. There will be also a beautiful and special Christmas water and music show at the Magic Fountain.

Barcelona’s Christmas lights have serious style and fit in perfectly with the city’s glamorous but funky architecture. They’re everywhere in the city centre, from Las Ramblas to Portal d’Angel and Passeig de Gràcia.

During December, there are many Christmas markets in Barcelona.
The oldest, biggest and most traditional market is “Feria de Santa Lucia”, in front of Barcelona’s Cathedral and on the Avenida de la Cathedral and the small streets around it, there are almost 300 stalls with decorations and gifts.

Events - Barcelona, Spain

At times life in Barcelona can seem like one long fiesta, with every barrio in the city celebrating its own patron saint days and a Bacchanalic carnival vibe taking over the entire town one district at a time. In addition to these traditional street parties, a plethora of famous rock and dance festivals invade Barcelona every year.

    January - Epiphany (5th/6th)

  • Largely ignored in most countries, the arrival of the three kings (wisemen, magi, geezers...) to the Messiah's manger is keenly awaited in Spain as this is when the Spaniards exchange gifts, Christmas style. The eve of the Epiphany (the 5th January) is marked by the Calvacada del Reis - a grand parade replete with acrobats, clowns and elves.
  • February / March - Carnival

  • Move over Rio, Barcelona's carnival is back and growing in popularity year by year. As in most Catholic countries carnival in Spain is the last chance to go wild before Lent, when forty days of abstinence kick in. Banned by Franco from 1936 to 1980 this vibrant festival is experiencing a healthy revival of interest in the new millenium. The culmination of the party is La Gran Rua de Carneval, when visitors can expect to see plenty of fancy dress, floats and fireworks form a grand parade down one of the city's main streets.
  • April - Dia de Sant Jordi (23rd)

  • St. George (Sant Jordi) was a busy man, and not only did he gallivant about the English countryside slaying dragons, but occasionally he would be called upon in these warmer climes to dispatch a nasty lizard or two. Such heroic behaviour saw him dubbed patron saint of Catalonia and his festival is certainly one of the most colourful in the city.
  • May - Formula One Spanish Grand Prix

  • The F1 set-up roars into the region in May each year for the Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Montmelo (20kms outside Barcelona). What with qualifiers, engine checks and pretty paddock girls roaming around this becomes a three day event of fuel, flags and Ferraris.
  • May / June - Primavera Sound Festival

  • This popular alternative rock and dance festival takes place in late spring/early summer each year in the Parc del Forum. Extensive line ups mix big names such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Bloc Party with fashionable indie acts such as Bat For Lashes, British Sea Power and Yo La Tengo. A real music lovers' event.
  • June - Sant Joan (23rd/24th)

  • The eve of Sant Joan (aka Sant Juan/St. John, depending where you come from) is undoubtedly the biggest party night of the year in Spain's fiesta-filled diary. This midsummer celebration is famed for it's endless fireworks and total disregard to EU safety regulations. As the 24th is a public holiday all and sundry take the opportunity to overindulge in cerveza and everyone except granny will still be partying come sunrise. The beach is the place to be for this one.
  • July - Benicassim International Festival (FIB)

  • Spain's most famous international music festival takes place down the road from Barcelona, in Benicassim, a port town just outside Valencia. Festival-goers typically arrive several days early to camp out before the big guns arrive in the form of Oasis, Basement Jaxx and The Artic Monkeys etc.
  • August - Festa Major de Gracia

  • The most famous of Barcelona's district festivals (almost every barri in BCN has one during summer), is undoubtedly the Festa Major de Gracia. For just over a week in August the area's streets are adorned with wonderful papier mache statues, woodwork ornaments and decorative lanterns and every square becomes a concert venue as the fiesta gets under full swing. Needless to say drinking is rife as bars and cafes heave with thirsty festival goers and many more swig al fresco from Don Simon cartons of sangria. A great carnival vibe.
  • September - Festa de la Merce (24th)

  • Once upon a time (in 1687 to be precise) the city of Barcelona suffered a terrible swarm of locusts and placed all hope of deliverance in the generous bosom of Our Lady the Virgin of Mercy. When she promptly dispelled the pesky plague the council declared her patron of the city and a festival was set up in her honour. Noise and fireworks (the staple of any self-respecting Spanish festival) are the order of the day, but in addition mischievous devils need to be ambushed by the townsfolk and banished - and various other Catalan traditions are enacted. A hefty programme of concerts accompanies festivities, with many events taking place either side of the big day itself.
  • November - L'Alternativa

  • Barcelona Independent Film Festival (November) Another festival organised by the culture cats at the CCCB, L'Alternativa acts as a platform to promote new directors and original works from the world of film. To quote their website, L'Alternativa is all about exposing you to "films that shake you up, make you feel alive and make you think."
  • December - Christmas Markets

  • There are several Christmas markets dotted around the city, including the Fira de Santa Llucia outside the Cathedral, where you can buy a wide range of Christmas decorations and artisan craftwork, and an antiques market off the Plaza de Catalunya. The markets have a definite Spanish and Catalan flavour so there is no Gluwein or Bratwurst in sight, although the atmosphere is undeniably Christmassy.

  1. “"We had an absolute blast in Barcelona. The apartment was great – it was clean, comfortable and beautiful. The location is perfect. Alex, the Concierge, was really helpful, and had already made us a reservation for Friday night’s dinner which we were grateful for. It’s worth noting that there was no pressure for us to go, he said he’d cancel it if necessary. The maids did a good job too! Thanks also for your suggestion to go to Jamie Berestein – what a cool place! Reasonable for breakfast too. All in all a great experience and no negatives to report. 2. “"We had a wonderful stay at the Barcelona apartment. The concierge, Alex, was very helpful in pointing things out and places to eat that my friend and I would enjoy." V.R. commented on 23-Apr-2015 11:31 AM
  3. “Many thanks for your message. We had a great holiday in Barcelona. The city is fantastic - so much to do and wonderful food. Alex and Cecilia were great and the apartment is very well located and beautifully decorated. Many thanks and all the best for the new year!" V.C. commented on 09-Jan-2014 01:36 PM
  4. “Our stay in the Barcelona apartment was marvelous. We loved the apartment decor and comfort and, best of all, the location. It is so conveniently located to everything and we were able to walk and to take the subway everywhere. Both Alex and Cecilia were great. Alex made it very clear that he was at our service and provided really helpful advice when we called on him. Cecilia was also extremely helpful and did a great job of keeping the apt. clean and neat. Our guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly as well. Kind regards and happy holidays! " B.C.C. commented on 17-Dec-2013 04:52 PM
  5. “We thought the apartment in Barcelona was fantastic - really conveniently situated and very comfortable. We all greatly enjoyed our stay and the blackboard in the kitchen was a particular hit with our teenagers. Alex was fantastic - as you know we do not typically need to use the concierge greatly but what he did do he did really well. I suppose that if I had been really trying to challenge him I could have asked him to organise some tickets for the Barcelona - Real Madrid football match on the Saturday evening. Sadly he may have actually sourced some but judging from the prices around the city, I am not sure that I would have liked the cost. Thankfully the rest of the family were not into football and so I contented myself with watching it on TV. We thought the restaurants were really good. We could have been a little bit bolder but we ate all three nights in restaurants that were less than 5 mins from the apartment. All three were great and different. We particularly liked the one just outside of the apartment door. Thank you once again for your kind enquiry. " C.T. commented on 05-Nov-2013 11:47 AM
  6. “We very much enjoyed our stay in Barcelona and found Alex to be very helpful and enthusiastic. Best wishes, " K.T-M. commented on 31-Oct-2013 09:50 AM
  7. “We had a wonderful time – the weather was kind with the exception of one heavy thunderstorm, although the forecast had been rather overcast and rainy! The train journey worked especially well. 7.20 euros for 2 people one way. Alex did mention a T10 ticket can also be used, but we bought Bus Turistic 2 day pass and travelled around Barcelona on the bus. The main problem was the queues, but it seems part of Barcelona life. We booked Sagrada Familia on line so didn’t have to wait – a definite must!! Thanks" S.H. commented on 23-Oct-2013 03:29 PM
  8. “We had the most amazing time in Barcelona! The Rocksure apartment is very comfortable and well located, and Alex is without a doubt, the best concierge we’ve experienced. He anticipated our dining needs and made reservations ahead of time for us. He would then email us what he’d arranged, with directions and all we had to do was show up. Not one bad experience! We had one day of rain and he showed up on his day off, with umbrellas for us! The two drivers that we had, James for the City Tour, and Roman for our Wine/Cava Tour were top notch. Thank you for calling us upon our arrival in Barcelona, that was very thoughtful, and the first indication of the excellent service we were about to receive from Rocksure! Hope all is well in your world, Best regards," F.C. commented on 25-Sep-2013 12:25 PM
  9. “Hi, we had a GREAT time in Barcelona and LOVED the apartment. Alex was very helpful. He recommended and got us reservations at Bar Mut; I've been to a lot of great restaurants but Bar Mut ranks in the top 3. Thanks again," M.T. commented on 13-Sep-2013 10:38 AM

  11. “The apartment was fantastic, I'm a little tired from all the walking we both did within the time period we spent out there, but we both thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Alex was fine, he showed us around the apartment and laid on several different websites for us to browse through for things like, attractions and nice restaurants. The apartment was always clean and tidy so no issues there. At present I can't think of anything that would aid the setup you already have in place. Thanks for checking on us, its greatly appreciated. Happy to say no issues from us. As stated above we thoroughly enjoyed staying in your apartment." M.W. commented on 03-Sep-2013 12:54 PM

Despite a fairly frantic schedule we only scratched the surface of what there is to do and see in the City so will definitely be going back a few more times. Alex was very helpful and without prompting had booked dinner for us in a fabulous Tapa’s bar on Friday evening which got the weekend off to a roaring start." N.G. commented on 21-Feb-2013 02:43 PM

We were met by Alex who was helpful, polite and professional. The apartment was in excellent condition. It was clean, tidy, well furnished and much more spacious than we anticipated. The blackboard in the kitchen was a hit with the girls! It is impossible not to enjoy Barcelona, from Gaudi to shops to the Hard Rock cafe and a cable car ride as well. If all the experiences we have with Rocksure are as good as this one we will be very contented shareholders. Thank you for the clarity of instructions." M.L. commented on 30-Oct-2012 10:43 AM
