Climate

Climate - Prague, Czech Republic

The winters are relatively cold with very little sunshine. Snow cover can be common between mid-November to late March. Summers usually bring fine sunny days with highs being around 25 degrees. Nights can be quite cool even in summer, though. Precipitation in Prague is rather low (it is less rainy than Rome and Paris) as the shadow of the Ore Mountains and the Czech Central Highlands takes effect.

Things To Do

Things To Do - Prague, Czech Republic

The Czech capital is one of the most beautiful places on earth – a space of magic, and a true paradise for the romantic spirit. Here you can walk along narrow medieval streets lit by authentic gaslight, row quietly together along the Vltava River or stop in a nice café where time stopped a century ago.

Charles Bridge
Prague’s oldest bridge, and one of its most iconic structures, is Charles Bridge, which connects Old Town with Malá Strana. Dating from 1347, it was originally called the Stone Bridge, or Prague Bridge, before being named Charles Bridge in 1870, after its founder King Charles IV.

As one of the city’s most popular and recognisable sites, Charles Bridge is adorned with 30 stone statues of saints and personages, added between 1683 and 1928; however, these are all replicas today. The originals are housed in the Lapidarium museum in Holešovice.

The most famous statue on the bridge is that of St. John of Nepomuk; rubbing his foot is rumoured to bring good luck. There’s an earlier legend, though, that recommends you to find the spot where St. John was thrown from the bridge, marked by a small brass cross, and make a wish.

Popular Jazz & Music Venues
Prague has something to offer music lovers of all genres. Prague's jazz and blues clubs are perfect for having a relaxing drink, dinner, or coffee with friends while listening to local and international bands play live music well into the evening.

Strahov Monastery
Strahov Monastery, and its surrounding area, has a serene, meditative quality. However, its library is its most impressive feature, comprising one of the oldest monastic collections in the country.

The library is located in the theological and philosophical halls and is over 800 years old. Despite ransacking by invading armies, it holds 16,000 books.

Shopping in the fashionable boutiques on Parizska
Looking for top designer fashion stores in Prague? Prague street Parizska is the 5th Avenue of Prague where you can find most of the top fashion designer stores such as Gucci, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and many more.

The famous Jewish Quarter
The Jewish Quarter in Prague contains the most well-preserved Jewish historical monuments in Europe. Six synagogues still stand in this region in addition to the historic Jewish Town Hall and the Old Jewish Cemetery, considered one of the most remarkable burial grounds of its kind in Europe.

View from Petrin Tower
The most distinctive dominant feature of Petřín is without a doubt the tower set in landscaped gardens. Here you'll also find a hall of mirrors, a church, a rose garden and an observatory. If you think that it reminds you of the most famous dominant feature in Paris, you won’t be far from the truth. It is in fact a scaled-down copy of the Eiffel tower. Before climbing it, make sure you have enough free memory in your camera, as the panoramic view here is one of the most beautiful in Prague.

Christmas Markets
If you holiday in Prague in late November or December, visiting the charming Christmas markets is simply a must. There are a number of markets to choose from, all within a few minutes walk of each other. The most popular Christmas stalls to visit are located in the lovely squares of Wenceslas and the Old Town, with smaller markets to be found at Namesti Republiky and Hevelske Trziste. From the brightly coloured traditional handmade toys, ornaments and gifts to the delicate glass baubles and sparkling Christmas decorations, there is plenty to explore.

As you treat your taste buds, sit back and pamper all your senses and enjoy the magnificent Prague architecture and listen to the sounds of the street performers, carol singers of orchestras who take to the streets. Take a photo in front of the huge Old Town Square Christmas tree and look at the nativity scenes which are on display.

Prague Opera Houses
Prague opera houses are among the finest in Europe, and present a repertoire of opera, ballet and classical concerts all year round.

The Prague State Opera presents a varied programme of opera and ballet performances by Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Puccini, Rossini, Donizetti, Prokofiev and other international composers. Formerly the German Theatre, it was built in 1888 by Fellner & Helmer where great musicians including Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, Gustav Mahler, Lilly Lehmann, Alexander Zemlinsky, Georg Szell and Richard Strauss have all performed.

The National Theatre in Prague is a stunning neo-Renaissance building dating from 1868-83 and is instantly recognisable from the river. The theatre is set on the banks of the River Vltava, one bridge along from Charles Bridge.

  • Witches' Night (Paleni Carodejnic)
An ancient folk festival, Witches' Night is a cross between Halloween and May Day and marks the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. An effigy of a hag, or witch, said to resemble winter (or perhaps a historical reference to the Czech pastime of witch-hunting) is burnt on a pyre on hill tops across the country.

  • Celebration of St. Wenceslas
On Wenceslas Square there are market stalls selling food, drinks and local crafts, as well as an entertaining programme connected to St Wenceslas, the main patron saint of the Czech Republic.
  • December

  • Christmas Markets
Christmas decorations, hand-made wooden toys, candles, jewellery, sweets, traditional food, baked chestnuts, grilled sausages, hot wine and other Czech products are on display in the Prague Christmas markets. A Christmas tree is lit and school children perform traditional Czech Christmas carols and dances.

  • Mikulas
Devils, St. Nicholas's and Angels roam the city centre in Prague, much to the awe of young Czech children, who are expected to recite a sing a song or recite a poem for them. Children believe their visit will determine whether they deserve their Christmas gifts or not. Visitors can experience this old Czech tradition best amongst the Christmas markets of the Old Town Square.

  1. “"I would like to say that my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Prague Apartment and were completely impressed by its decor, size, and location in the city!" B. H. commented on 20-Jul-2015 11:08 AM
  2. “"Prague is by far the nicest apartment we have stayed in. It is spacious and well furnished without having the feel of being overdone. The master bed was also very comfortable! We only did the normal tourist things mainly of walking and site seeing. The guided tour was well worth it as we learned a great deal about the history of the country which sets it in context. It was also nice to not go ouch every time I took my family of 5 out for a meal and to be able to get a nice beer for relatively little. Thank you so much." P. S. commented on 24-Jun-2015 12:22 PM
  3. “"A very enjoyable holiday. Prague is very beautiful and by our standards cheap. A superb apartment, once you master the designer’s idiosyncrasies, with a magnificent view of the river. Karen was very helpful and did not overburden us with unwanted advice." I. L. commented on 21-May-2015 09:33 AM
  4. “"We had a very enjoyable stay and we thought that Karen was an excellent and knowledgeable concierge." N. H. commented on 05-May-2015 09:23 AM
  5. “We had a wonderful time and everything was beautifully organised. The apartment was superb with everything you could want. The main bathroom is so big you could have a five a side footie match in there! We loved it. Best " I.A. commented on 29-Jan-2014 09:53 AM
  6. “Just got back yesterday and it was very good indeed, a wonderful apartment and a great city. The Concierge was very good. I don’t really have any suggestions for improvement.Thanks," M.L. commented on 10-Dec-2013 12:08 PM
  7. “We had an absolutely super time and loved it. Thank you. The apartment is stunning and Karen was very helpful indeed. We would love to return to the Prague apartment and would also love to try other apartments interspersed with using the lovely villas. Thank you for a lovely time. 8. “The stay in Prague was lovely. The apartment really is a bit of a show stopper, so light and with huge ceilings and long windows we were all wowed. Karen was really helpful and very friendly but it all went so smoothly that we didn't need to get in touch with her. I hope this is helpful. " O.  commented on 05-Nov-2013 12:35 PM
  9. “We had a fantastic time in the Prague apartment. How about a list of great bits about our stay. In no particular order: 1 The concierge - Karen who could not have been more helpful . She is a real advert for Rocksure. 2 The lift which goes into the apartment - how cool is that for teenage daughters. 3 The size of the apartment - big enough for Trooping the Colour. 4 The cupboards in the apartment - of absolutely no use but look brilliant. 5 The 2 restaurants which Karen recommended, particularly La Finestra [the Italian]. 6 The position of the apartment which is in easy walking distance of all the activity and history. 7 The weather. Whilst the UK was being battered we were walking around Prague without the need for coats. 8 The balcony - what a view of the river 9 We took a drive in an open top vintage car. Great if the weather is kind. Both of us had an expectation of grey / black Eastern European drab architecture from the communist era. Well we got that completely wrong. Great city and we will go back. Happy shareholders! Cheers, " M.L. commented on 31-Oct-2013 09:54 AM
  10. “Karen was excellent, the location of the apartment was great and the apartment was gorgeous." C.M. commented on 09-Oct-2013 09:40 AM
  11. “We love the apartment! so much space and this wall between the master bedroom and the living room is such a great time saver! Best regards" M.H. commented on 20-Sep-2013 10:31 AM
  12. “Sorry for the delay in replying - life just seems to get in the way. Prague was most enjoyable, apart from the weather, not technically a Rocksure responsibility!. The apartment certainly has the 'wow' factor from the location, to the private lift, the chandeliers, the Master bedroom en-suite and the somewhat bizarre one-way mirror. Everything was in good order and the concierge, although I didn't meet her myself, was helpful on the phone the couple of times we spoke. Thanks, regards" D.O. commented on 10-Jul-2013 12:08 PM
  13. “I wanted to thank you and your staff as well as Karen and her group. We had a wonderful stay in Prague this past weekend. The apartment is stunning and we made good use of it. Prague is a beautiful city and we believe we were able to experience a good part of it even though our stay was so short. Thanks again." S.L. and D.P. commented on 21-May-2013 04:56 PM
  14. “We had a very enjoyable visit to Prague last week. It is a city which I have visited off and on for the last twenty years (I was last there just under two years ago) but had not really had the opportunity to see as I was always working. It was lovely to spend some time visiting the sights. The family had never been there before and found the city enchanting. The apartment was fantastic - a great location and fabulous layout and decor. My friends who live in Prague were very impressed when they stopped by for some pre dinner drinks. Karen was also great. We were particularly grateful to her for allowing us to arrive early thereby enabling us to have lunch in the city last Monday. Also the airport transport worked really well. As you know, we tend to be able to navigate around places ourselves so we are not heavy users of the concierge service. However, what we needed Karen to do, she did really efficiently. As I have said above, overall the apartment was fantastic and we really loved it. We shall certainly go back. Kind regards," C.T. commented on 10-Apr-2013 12:33 PM
  15. “We had a great time though the weather was cold! We liked the apartment very much. In fact we would say it was the best of the lot so far in terms of size, decor and location. We will no doubt visit again but try and choose a warmer time of year! Best wishes," T.S.  commented on 03-Apr-2013 11:56 AM
  16. “We had a very pleasant stay. We didn’t really use the concierge service at all, though it was nice to have Karen there to meet us and put us in the picture of where we were and what was what in the apartment, and we might use her more if we went again (this trip was “wander around to get the feel of everywhere” for 3 of us who hadn’t been to Prague before – next time we might be in more “take advantage of some of the cultural events and happenings” mode). We will almost certainly go back – we like Prague, and the apartment is very well situated and very comfortable overall. The selection of books there was also very good."  T.T. commented on 26-Feb-2013 12:11 PM
  17. “We had a great weekend in Prague, and appreciated the friendly welcome and help from Karen. Aren't the mirrored cupboards dramatic! The sense of space in the flat is wonderful and the location with tram and underground so near is very convenient. Well done the Rocksure team for this super addition to the portfolio!! Snow falling at night in the Christmas Market in the Old Town Square was magical." I.R. commented on 13-Dec-2012 04:55 PM
  18. “Prague apartment is fantastic…and uncluttered." N.H. commented on 10-Dec-2012 12:54 PM
  19. “The apartment itself is amazing on first impression, stepping out of the lift straight into it! The size and scale of the apartment are terrific. Frankly we have owned smaller flats than the main bathroom alone! The facilities and furnishings are suitably neutral and classy at the same time. This was our third Capital Fund experience, after Paris and Florence, and we are now getting the structure right (for us). We take another couple with us, book the Friday and Saturday night restaurants (after liaison with the Concierge), book a walking tour for the first and/or second morning, and sort out a local breakfast option, so we are not tempted to just remain in bed! This was our fifth visit to Prague, but the first for around four years, so we knew it quite well already. However, the experience of 'living' in your own apartment definitely gave it a new dimension and an extra sense of freedom. Like many great European cities, Prague is best viewed off peak, and we were lucky to visit in November and have blue sky days and not too cold. The Cafe Slavia is a five minute walk on the way to the old town, and is a very nice breakfast spot, having been one of the cities 'litterati' joints. there are pictures of a number of famous people there (we had Hilary Clinton overhead), so I guess we were not alone in liking it. You can pick up a 'free' walking tour guide by the astrological clock in the Old Square at 10.45am. We had one all to ourselves for around three hours and paid him an optional 60 Euros. He was very good, spoke great English and showed us things we would never have seen or spotted in a dozen trips. As for eating, it is easy to eat averagely in Prague but really top restaurants are in short supply, and really good wine lists even shorter. However we found the Kampa Group restaurants, recommended by Karen the Concierge were good, especially the Cihelna, which was very good. For local food we liked the Cafe Louvre. it is a bit of a meat and dumplings upstairs, turn of the century, cafe, but also has a jazz club underneath, where Bill Clinton has played in the past, so worth checking out. The transfers were well organised and very reasonably priced. We also found pre-booking a train/tram card a worthwhile thing to do. We will go again, but look forward to trying some of the other Rocksure options first. " J.C. commented on 10-Dec-2012 12:45 PM
  20. “We had a great time in Prague and think that you have found yourself an ideal welcoming host in Karen! She gave us some very good restaurant recommendations especially on the veggie front being vegetarian herself! We were very impressed with the apartment and its location and look forward to going out there again! " J.Q. and S.Q. commented on 10-Dec-2012 12:31 PM
  21. “We had a wonderful time in Prague. Karen was very helpful and devoted a good amount of time explaining to us the ins and outs of the city. The apartment is huge and very well appointed. Top notch. Thanks a lot, we are very satisfied with our trip." E.I.C. commented on 21-Nov-2012 10:03 AM
  22. “What a beautiful apartment! We've loved being here and enjoyed Prague very much. Glad we brought comfortable shoes as we have walked miles and miles! Thank you Karen for your useful advice and tips when we arrived and for the restaurant recommendations. commented on 24-Oct-2012 02:05 PM
  23. “We had a lovely time in Prague thank you. The apartment is amazing, and has been refurbished beautifully. My favourite so far! Love the view over the river too! The concierge was very helpful and friendly. She took time to show us where to go, and what not to bother with, and recommended an excellent restaurant on the river, which we went to the first night of our stay. The bed was so comfortable, and the bathroom was incredible! I loved the chandeliers in the lounge! Overall we had a lovely time, and were very happy there." G.N. and M.N. commented on 27-Sep-2012 01:58 PM
  24. “We enjoyed our stay in the Prague apartment. It was great fun!!! Karen gave us useful tips of how to get about and we had a wonderful time. Tony was also a fund of information and very helpful. Looking forward now to a time at home and then to Portugal in November." J.J and T.J. commented on 13-Sep-2012 01:15 PM
